In my sound piece
Raumantworten (space responses), I contrast acoustic and spatial
conditions with each other. A space can be objectively assessed in terms of
value/character only in comparison with another. In my installation, I use
5 loudspeakers, set up in a horizontal row at ear height. By means of software
written expressly for this installation, it is possible for me to compose
exact experimental rows on this 5-point matrix. The audio result is a composition
with up to 300 space responses. A space response (i.e. impulse)
is commensurate with the total of all the echoes that follow a needle-shaped
sound event (i.e.: a bang, a shot from a gun...) in a given space. Important
to the harmonic spatial composition are the quantitative relationships between
the reflections.
