In 1991, while still a student at the Kunstakademie Münster,
Jens Brand — impressed by Phill Niblock and his Experimental Intermedia
Foundation and by the experience of performances at Het Apollohuis (Akio Suzuki
& Junko Wada, Paul Panhuysen) — began to deal with experimental music
and sound art. Since then, a large number of installations, music performances
and intermedia works have been created that operate, in terms of form and content,
at the scarcely cultivated margins of the (in the meantime) established genres
of installation and performance. Concepts are Brand's jumping-off point —
soon an idea that suffers under the yoke of logic emancipates itself, turning
into a promising and original organism. Often the scarcely matured work no longer
can even remember what a little grey notion it once was. If one asks such an
organism whether it considers itself to be a sculpture, a composition or a sound
installation, it just shrugs its shoulders – or what might pass for shoulders
– and asks others to make that determination, which it thereupon throws
into question.
