The new glass building of the Akademie der Künste, with its many stairways
and balconies, is exciting. Not all areas are accessible to the public, some
prove to be reflections, mirages that one can only walk through with the eyes.
Passaggio – Staccato is a site-specific installation with foil, wood
and leather scent, with which I temporarily accentuate the staircases of the
controversial building: underneath the stairs one can see floor plans of the
building's architectonic elements as small foil cut-outs. From a seat in the
café, they mirror the dark floor as »black holes«, and
when walking past them, they dazzlingly reflect the light that shines in through
the glass wall. The long bridge above the café is audible, but the
staccato of the wooden slats sounds only when someone walks on the elongated
unstable floor installation. It can be walked along like a long uneven catwalk
(or better »soundwalk«) that challenges the walker's sense of
balance, acoustically registering every movement. Or it can be used to create
sound compositions, since rhythmic patterns or free rhythms can be played
/ danced as solos or by ensembles on the spread-out percussion instrument.
– En route to the roof terrace, a fleeting reference to the World Cup
can be perceived as an olfactory stimulus. (We still speak of the »leather«,
even though footballs have long been made out of synthetics.) This immaterial
installation is like an illusion, like the »artificial spaces«
of the building on Pariser Platz.
