In 2005 a series of seven books with hand written texts
and integrated piezo loudspeaker elements was made for an exhibition at
the Bibliothèque Robert Desnos in Paris within the festival Instants Chavirés.
This led to the development in 2006 of several works with books and paper:
à lire en silence (to be read in silence)
a first series of artist’s editions containing small notebooks with original
handwritten texts, piezo loudspeakers attached directly on top of the texts,
an audio CD and a display box; and à voir en silence
(to be seen in silence) a second series of artist’s editions containing
handmade papers with piezo loudspeaker elements, an audio CD and a display
box. In à voir en silence the thin piezo loudspeaker elements and their
associated wires are integrated directly into the paper at the papermaking
stage. The speaker elements in all of these works recall earlier installation
pieces in which small loudspeakers are arranged in plant-like forms. Silent
Music, the best known installation of this kind, has been installed
in countless museums and public spaces since 1994. In comparison to these
installations, however, the artist’s editions deal with a much more personalized
listening and viewing experience. They are meant for »private«
rather than »mass« consumption.
