Pure silk – those
are the threads from which this InstallAction is woven. Shrouded in lengths
of silk fabric, the performers wander with eyes blindfolded among the dancers
of a baroque ensemble, who are performing original choreography in authentic
costumes in the room. Only the rustling of the silk and the procession of
the steps complement the inaudible, imaginary baroque music. The precisely
calibrated paths and movements of the baroque dancers are in contrast to the
slow movements of the two performers, who stroke and squeeze the shimmering
fabric and, listening, test its authenticity. Because one can recognise the
quality of the silk by its sound. The typically crunching rustle of the fabric,
reminiscent of stepping on freshly fallen snow – the »silk scroop«
– was once considered a mark identifying ladies of the upper class.
To imitate the desirable textile, one tried to create the rustle with other
fabrics as well. Early sound designers experimented with milk and vinegar,
soap and fat. But the two Swiss artists appear not only as »silk rustlers«;
they also act as mediums: Nicola Sabbattini (1574–1654), who in 1603
published the first handbook on theatre technology: Pratica di fabricar Scene
e machine ne’teatri – speaks from their mouths, giving instructions
for stage design and the construction of machines for the theatre.
